Memphis helped change how America buys groceries. On September 6, 1916, Clarence Saunders opened the first Piggly Wiggly at 79 Jefferson Street, pioneering the self-service grocery shopping model.

The Overton Park Shell is a New Deal landmark. Built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration, the open-air venue is one of only a handful of surviving bandshells from that program.

A young Elvis Presley took a pivotal step at the Shell. On July 30, 1954, he opened for Slim Whitman there in an early professional performance that helped introduce his sound to Memphis audiences.

Some local sights lose their novelty over time.

The skyline, bridges, and bluffs settle into a scene that feels both familiar and remarkable. In a city known for music, food, and history, this is one of the simplest local experiences, and one of the most memorable.
