The Wolf River Greenway |
The expanding greenway connects neighborhoods, parks, and riverfront nature through the heart of Memphis. |
Memphis has no shortage of big-name outdoor spaces, but one of the city’s most useful wellness assets is still growing quietly along the Wolf River.
The Wolf River Greenway is a paved pedestrian and bicycle pathway following the meanders of the Wolf River. When complete, it is planned to stretch 26 miles, connecting the north end of Mud Island through north-central Memphis to Shelby Farms Park, Germantown, and Collierville. The Wolf River Conservancy says about 14 miles are currently open to the public, with the full route expected to connect more than 22 neighborhoods.
What makes the Greenway special is that it is not just a trail. It is a corridor of protected green space, giving Memphians a place to walk, run, bike, birdwatch, and get outside without leaving the city. Sections include river views, forested stretches, bridges, boardwalks, trailhead parking, and connections to larger outdoor systems such as Shelby Farms and the River Line.
For active readers, it is an easy wellness pick: choose a short section, bring water, go early in the day during summer heat, and use the Wolf River Conservancy’s interactive map to find access points and parking. Popular trailheads include Mud Island, Epping Way, Kennedy Park, Shady Grove, Kirby Parkway, and Wolf Crossing.
The bigger story is what the Greenway represents for Memphis. It links neighborhoods, parks, wildlife habitat, and everyday recreation into one growing outdoor network. In a city known for music, food, and riverfront history, the Wolf River Greenway is a reminder that local quality of life also depends on the simple things: shade, trails, safe places to move, and access to nature close to home. |
