State Auditor Opens Investigation Into Town of Walls Amid Land-Use Debate |
A state inquiry is underway as the DeSoto County town weighs rezoning more than 1,000 acres, but officials have not identified the investigation's subject |

The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor has confirmed that it opened an investigation involving the Town of Walls, a small DeSoto County community where a major land-use proposal has stirred public discussion.
State Auditor Shad White acknowledged the investigation on October 28, saying his office was aware of allegations and had begun its process.
He did not publicly identify the allegations, scope or target of the inquiry.
The separate rezoning debate
Walls officials have been considering a request to rezone more than 1,000 acres from agricultural to light-industrial use along the U.S. 61 corridor.
The proposed change has attracted attention from residents who want clearer information about its likely impact on roads, property, utilities and the surrounding community.
Some residents and public figures have speculated that the land might eventually support a large data center, but reporting on the proposal has not established an approved data-center project for the site.
Land-use rezoning would change what the property could be used for. It would not, by itself, confirm a particular facility, developer or construction timetable.
What the investigation establishes
White confirmed that the auditor's office has started its process, but declined to discuss the status or details of the investigation.
Because the subject has not been disclosed, it would be premature to say the investigation concerns the rezoning application.
There is also no public finding of wrongdoing in the available confirmation of the investigation.
Questions for residents and officials
Residents can follow town planning notices, meeting agendas and votes for developments in the rezoning request.
Any additional public statement from the State Auditor's Office may clarify the separate inquiry and whether further official action is taken.
Both topics merit scrutiny, but they should be evaluated on their own evidence rather than assumed to be connected.
901 Daily will report confirmed updates as the land-use decision and state investigation develop. |
