Memphis older adults and their families have an opportunity to connect with health information, practical assistance, and community organizations at the first Our Seniors, Our Legacy Expo on Wednesday, October 21.

The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Memphis Sports & Event Center on Maxwell Boulevard.

Organizers say the expo is designed to make it easier for seniors to discover support without having to contact many different agencies individually.

Approximately 25 community-based resources are expected to be represented.

Offerings include blood pressure screenings, legal information, and guidance about protecting personal finances.

For people caring for an aging parent, finding trustworthy answers can take time and persistence.

Gathering several organizations in one location allows attendees to ask questions directly and learn which services may fit their needs.

Health and financial information in one place

Basic health screenings may help participants identify questions to discuss later with their own medical professionals.

Legal and financial education is another important component, especially when older adults are sorting through benefits, important documents, or unfamiliar solicitations.

Visitors should avoid sharing sensitive identification or financial details unless they are confident they are dealing with a legitimate organization and understand why the information is needed.

Attendees may find it useful to bring a short list of questions about healthcare, housing, caregiving, or other concerns.

The expo also includes music, a DJ, and bingo, making the day both informative and social.

State Representative Antonio Parkinson has encouraged local seniors to attend and highlighted the value of helping older residents feel supported.

According to the event report, the gathering is powered by State Representative-elect Dr. Telisa Franklin.

Why local connections matter

For some older adults, the hardest part of getting assistance is simply learning what is available and where to begin.

Opportunities to meet community organizations face to face can make the process less confusing.

Caregivers may also benefit from conversations that point them toward resources for a family member.

Because this is the inaugural event, attendance and the exact range of services may vary.

Anyone hoping for a particular screening or specialized consultation should confirm availability at the event.
