Some Memphis traditions are measured not in years or buildings, but in small moments: a familiar counter, a cup of coffee, and the first bite of a warm doughnut.

For generations, Gibson’s Donuts on Mount Moriah Road has been just that kind of place, a local ritual shared by early risers, late-night visitors, families and longtime regulars.

A Neighborhood Tradition Since 1967

The shop opened in 1967, and its roots run deep in the Sea Isle neighborhood of East Memphis.

It later took the Gibson name when Lowell Gibson became its owner in the early 1970s.

In 1996, longtime customer Don DeWeese bought the business from the Gibson family, beginning another chapter in the shop’s history.

Over the years, members of the DeWeese family have helped keep the storefront a familiar gathering spot for customers who value consistency as much as sweets.

What Makes the Doughnuts Memorable?

Gibson’s has built its following on an assortment of freshly made doughnuts, from glazed favorites to filled varieties, crullers and specialty creations.

In a Tennessee Crossroads feature, DeWeese credited part of the shop’s texture to allowing its yeast dough to rise three times.

That patient approach, together with the easygoing atmosphere, has earned praise beyond Memphis.

Southern Living included Gibson’s among its notable Southern doughnut shops in 2024.

Yet the appeal goes beyond rankings: for many residents, a Gibson’s visit means reconnecting with a favorite part of the city.

More Than a Sweet Stop

Locals have celebrated the shop for its friendly counter service, familiar faces and community spirit.

Local public-radio reporting has also highlighted its history of generosity toward charitable organizations.

The shop’s story is so closely associated with Memphis that a portion of Mount Moriah Road has been designated Don DeWeese Boulevard.

Even people who have moved away often remember the stop they made before school, on the way to work, or during a visit home.

Make It Your One Local Thing

You can find Gibson’s at 760 Mount Moriah Road, Memphis.

Choose a favorite doughnut, try a new variety, or introduce someone to a neighborhood institution they may have driven past for years.

Because business hours and product availability can change, check with the shop before making a special trip.

The next time you want a simple Memphis outing, you do not need an elaborate itinerary.

Sometimes one local thing is a paper bag, a friendly greeting and a tradition worth keeping.
