Memphis and the surrounding suburbs are getting ready for a bigger-than-usual Independence Day weekend, as this year’s celebrations also mark America’s 250th anniversary.
The biggest downtown event is Independence Day on the River, set for Saturday, July 4, from 6–9 p.m. at Tom Lee Park. The free celebration will include live entertainment, riverfront views, and a drone and fireworks show at 9 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and guests can enter through several access points, including Beale Street and Riverside Drive, CutBank Bluff at Vance Avenue, and Riverside Drive at West Georgia Avenue. Metal detectors will be used at entrances.
The downtown celebration gives Memphis a fitting setting for the 250th anniversary: the Mississippi River, the Mighty Lights, and one of the city’s most visible public spaces. Memphis Travel is also highlighting the weekend as part of America’s 250th birthday, noting that the downtown riverfront fireworks will include a new drone show before the fireworks finale.
Several suburban celebrations are also on the calendar. Bartlett’s Fireworks Extravaganza is scheduled for Thursday, July 2, from 6–9:30 p.m. at the Bobby K. Flaherty Municipal Center, with fireworks expected around 9:10 p.m. In Collierville, the town’s Independence Day Celebration is set for July 4, with live music from Alexis Grace and Party Planet and an 18-minute fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Collierville’s event page specifically frames this year’s celebration around the nation’s 250th anniversary.
For families, the practical advice is simple: arrive early, bring water, expect security checks at larger events, and plan parking before heading out. Downtown visitors should also keep an eye on riverfront traffic and road access around Tom Lee Park.
This year’s holiday is more than a long weekend. For Memphis, it is a chance to gather along the river, support local celebrations, and mark a once-in-a-generation Independence Day milestone close to home. |
