Medicare Open Enrollment starts Thursday, October 15, 2026, and ends Monday, December 7.

For older adults across Memphis, Shelby County, and West Tennessee, this is the annual opportunity to review Medicare health and prescription drug coverage and make changes for 2027.

Any changes made during this enrollment window generally take effect January 1, 2027.

December 7 is the key deadline: Medicare or the plan must receive an enrollment request by that date.

Why this year's review matters

Even if a current plan has worked well, next year's premiums, deductibles, medication costs, covered benefits, and participating doctors or pharmacies may differ.

Some insurers are also reducing or discontinuing particular Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans for 2027.

That makes reading the Annual Notice of Change especially important.

This document, usually sent by a plan in the fall, explains what will change in the coming year.

Do not assume that last year's doctors, prescriptions, or costs will automatically remain the same.

What can you change?

During Open Enrollment, people already on Medicare may switch Medicare Advantage plans, move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or join, drop, or change eligible Medicare prescription drug plans.

People considering a move back to Original Medicare should examine whether they need a separate Part D plan and whether they qualify to buy Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap.

Medigap enrollment rights can be limited, and a policy may not be available on the terms someone expects.

This fall enrollment window is not the same as the initial enrollment period for someone first turning 65.

Those new to Medicare should check the separate rules and dates that apply to their circumstances.

A five-point coverage check

First, list the prescriptions you currently take, including the dosage and preferred pharmacy.

Second, verify whether your physicians, specialists, and hospitals will participate in the plan you are considering for 2027.

Third, compare total potential costs, not just the advertised monthly premium.

Include deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and the plan's yearly out-of-pocket limit where applicable.

Fourth, examine prescription formularies, pharmacy networks, and any medication restrictions or prior authorization rules.

Fifth, review benefits that matter to you, such as dental, vision, hearing, or transportation, without allowing extras to outweigh essential medical coverage.

Free assistance is available

Medicare's official Plan Finder lets beneficiaries compare 2027 health and drug plan options by ZIP code, medicines, and other needs.

Residents can also call 1-800-MEDICARE for assistance.

The Tennessee State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as SHIP, provides free, unbiased Medicare counseling through regional partners.

Older residents and caregivers can seek help early instead of waiting until the final days of enrollment.

Beware of unsolicited calls or messages pressuring you to share a Medicare number or make an immediate plan change.

An unfamiliar caller's urgency is not proof that a deadline or offer is legitimate.

If you are satisfied with your current plan and confirm that it is offered next year with suitable coverage, you may not need to make a change.

Nevertheless, a careful annual review is one of the simplest ways to avoid unexpected costs or gaps.

Mark your calendar: October 15 through December 7, 2026, for changes that begin January 1, 2027.
