Keeping the Heat On: Utility Assistance for Memphis Seniors This Winter |
MLGW payment options, fixed-income due dates and community assistance can help older residents plan for colder weather |

Winter utility expenses can put pressure on a household budget, especially when income arrives once a month. For older Memphis residents, several programs may make bills easier to manage.
Start with the MLGW Net Due Date program
If you are retired or living on a fixed income and receive one check near the beginning of each month, MLGW says you may qualify to move your bill's net due date until after that income arrives.
This changes the payment timing, not the amount owed. Ask MLGW whether your account qualifies before assuming a due date has changed.
Ask about a payment arrangement
MLGW may offer an extended payment plan in certain circumstances for customers with past-due balances, with payments added to regular bills.
Other listed options include Budget Billing, On Track and PowerPay. Each has different requirements and may not be suitable for every household.
Customers should ask what enrollment means for their balance, monthly payments and service before selecting a program.
Let someone you trust receive a warning
MLGW's Third Party Notification program allows customers to designate another person to be contacted if a service cutoff is pending because of insufficient payment.
The designated person is not responsible for the bill. The notice is simply another chance for a family member, neighbor or caregiver to help.
For information, call MLGW Customer Care at 901-544-6549.
Find help when the bill is too high
Shelby County's Community Services Agency administers utility assistance programs, including assistance funded through LIHEAP. Eligibility, documentation, available funding and application windows can change.
MLGW also lists the Plus-1 assistance program and directs residents to the Shelby County Community Services Agency for current utility-assistance information.
Residents can call 2-1-1 for referrals to local social services, including utility assistance.
Before cold weather arrives
Gather your recent utility statement, identification and income documents before contacting an assistance agency, but confirm exactly what it requires.
Ask MLGW about the due-date program or payment plans early rather than waiting for a disconnect notice.
Use the official MLGW website at mlgw.com/utilityassistance to check current programs; never send payment or personal details to an unsolicited caller claiming to represent a utility.
For many families, knowing which questions to ask is the first step toward keeping a safe, comfortable home through winter. |
