An 11-year-old fourth grader in Holly Springs has earned community-wide praise for staying focused during a frightening emergency.
Jon Wess-Pass called 911 after a four-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle on October 22, then remained with her until adults and emergency responders could help.
A quick response when it counted
Jon recognized that the younger child needed immediate assistance and knew to call for help.
According to local reporting, he placed his jacket on the ground for the girl and used his lunchbox to help support her head as they waited.
He spoke to the emergency dispatcher and continued talking with the child, urging her to remain awake.
Jon later said he had learned about emergency response at school shortly before the incident.
Holly Springs says thank you
On Friday, October 30, Holly Springs police, educators, city leaders, family members and fellow students recognized Jon at a school assembly.
Police Chief Grant Glover praised his composure and described him as a role model for other children.
Mayor Charles Terry also joined the recognition.
The child's family expressed gratitude for his actions during an event that could have ended very differently.
A welcome outcome
The four-year-old was taken to a hospital. Subsequent reporting said she was expected to recover and had cuts and bruises but no broken bones.
That positive update brought relief to those who followed the story.
A lesson for families
Jon's actions are a reminder of the value of teaching children how to reach emergency services, give a clear location and seek help from trained responders.
Adults can practice age-appropriate emergency calling skills with young family members while emphasizing that children should never put themselves in danger to intervene.
At a time when much of the news is difficult, Holly Springs has a story of courage, preparation and neighbors looking out for one another. |
