A groundbreaking at Tobey Park on Tuesday, October 13, marked the beginning of a new chapter for accessible recreation in Memphis.

Memphis Parks has started work on a baseball field designed to welcome children and adults with disabilities.

The project is intended to offer more people the chance to participate in the game and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from organized sports.

For families who have struggled to find suitable recreational facilities, a dedicated inclusive field could mean more opportunities to join in rather than watch from the sidelines.

The ceremony brought together supporters of the project and community members who see the field as a meaningful addition to the city's park system.

Memphis Parks began the first phase of the effort this week.

A possible second phase would add a more inclusive playground for children to enjoy during and after games, although additional fundraising is needed.

That distinction matters because the initial groundbreaking does not mean every proposed feature is already funded or under construction.

Supporters have identified future fundraising events as one way to help move the broader vision forward.

The goal extends beyond baseball itself.

Accessible recreational spaces offer opportunities for friendship, physical activity, family gatherings, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Parents and caregivers may benefit from settings built with participants' different needs in mind.

Neighbors without disabilities can also gain from parks where more residents are able to participate together.

Inclusive design helps make community recreation a shared experience rather than a privilege available only to some.

As work proceeds, families should watch for announcements about construction progress, program enrollment, and eventual field availability.

The Tobey Park project is a promising step toward a more welcoming Memphis park system.
